Artefact 4 - Interactive 'Red Button' What to Do?

I had gone through all these options but still was not sure exactly how i would make this into an artefact..After thinking if there was anything i could make to test or somehow of seing if people really like, i couldnt think of anything other than a questionaire.

So i went ahead and created a questionaire trying to get as much info out of the people as possible and so most of the questions were giving qualitative answers.

The results came out very similar to the previous artefact but, with out so many variables that might of affected the participants and a much larger sample I could be more sure in the results. I found that age and gender does not appear to change the answers given and in contrary to what I had thought, most of the older generations prefer the modern style to the older style.

As Artefact 1 had a variety of flaws in it i have decided to redo it but using two differnt clips, one is the first ever music video made 'Travelin' Man' by Ricky Nelson and the second one is 'Flowers and Football Tops' by Glasvegas which won best special effects in a music video 2009.
I am going to make it silent though so there is not any bias due to the type of music.

After having completed Artefact 1 I realised there were a variety of problems with it and so, thought it would be a good idea to basically repeat this test but making some minor changes. The main problems were: firstly, I only had younger participants and secondly, the music seemed to play a large part in which video the participants preferred.

After watching them all I chose to use Department of Eagles video for "No One Does it Like You". This was due to the fact i thought it was the video i could do the most with and started editing it. Originally I was going to use the edited version compared to the real version but after putting them together and watching them there wasn't enough difference between them for anyone to really tell the difference. Instead, I decided to use some live performance footage I had from my client project and make a very basic/ old style of a music video which basically just consists of live performance footage. such as in the first ever music video "Travelin' man" by Ricky Nelson:

I completed my proposal in the past few days and and prepared my presentation. There were a few changes during the writing of the proposal as we had originally planned on making the documentary based on the man behind the music but after having meetings with him we realised that he didn't feel comfortable talking about his life. So we changed it so that it was based on his life in music which probably suits his personality better.

Chase and I went and discussed what exactly we should do about the proposal as we weren't sure what to do as he was going to do most of the directing and i was going to be the producer and editor.

Debs said to us that we should each do a proposal (one for the documentary and one for the music video) and we should take out the live performance section.

I first researched Lenroy Guiste to see if i can find out anything people may not know about him and found that he was part of the Porcelain Dolls, Royal Roots band, and that he toured with Macka B.

· The Marcus Garvey Studio in Nottingham was home to the recording, again under the control of producer Johnny White, with the album released on the Realistics Record label.

· failed to make the same impact as their previous releases and marked the beginning of the end for Nottingham's finest

· Within a year the band's members had gone their separate ways and the British and worldwide reggae fraternity had lost one of its finest exponents.

The Expository Style (Direct Address Documentary Voice): The expository (or Griersonian) style addresses the audience directly, usually through a narrator. The narrator is separated from the subject of the documentary and is making verbal commentary on it. This style tends to rely on the narration to tell the story rather than continuous visual images. Expository films usually seek to inform or instruct, are very pointed and leave little room for interpretation. Interviews, voice-over, and archival images are often combined as in Ken Burns' popular Civil War (1990).

The Impressionistic Style: The impressionistic style is more artistic than real. It seeks to create the art and impression to convey a story, rather than using a hard-hitting, objective lens. A film made in this style may take on the production qualities of a fictional film (reenactments) utilizing actors, stages, and art direction.

The Observational Direct Style (Direct Address to Viewer Documentary Voice): This style tries to mirror the world, rather than create a specific argument. Often this style of film is a series of vignettes. The direct observational style is noninterventionist and focuses on the immediate time.

The Observational Verité Style (Cinema Verité Documentary Voice): Observational Verité recognizes it’s very difficult to achieve the goal of nonintervention in the direct observational style, because once the subject is aware of the camera, the subject will modify his or her behavior. Thus verité uses the camera to invoke an interaction or response with the subject.

The Reflexive Style (Self-Reflexive Documentary Voice/Cinematic Essay): The reflexive style also recognized the difficulties of the observational direct style, and overcomes this by involving the filmmakers in the film itself. For example, a film that shows the documentarians filming the film utilizes a reflexive style

"Flight of the Chonchords" is a TV series about two unsuccessful kiwi music artists, Jemaine and Bret. In the first series they have moved to New York and there manager is a kiwi working for the New Zealand Consulet who only ever gets them gigs in places such as the libarary and in a lift.... In this series they have been living in New York for a Year and have yet to actually have a proper gig but that is there main aim, o and to get money! One reason i really like this program is it obviously has a very low budget and they use techniques to do things that look quite good cheaply, such as whilst they were making a music video they had the camera doing a 360 degreas turn to give the impression that sumone was spining and it worked quite well.

"Babylon" is a film from the 1980s that follows "Blue" and his "rasta crew" as they get close to a sound clash competition with a rival crew. Its Based in London, Blue is a calm likable character and throughout the film is trying to stop his mates from getting into fights even after alot of racial abuse, until he gets fired from his job as a car mechanic, there hangout gets broken into and there sound system smashed up, and he gets beaten down by plain clothed police man. After this he becomes increasingly angered and alienated and starts fighting back. This film addresses racism violence and the roots reggae lifestyle in London in the 1980s.

Chase and I got talking more in depth about the different roles we will be doing, what/ how many other people we may need to fill in the roles we don't have. We decided it would be a good idea to watch a few films credits and write down the roles in them, I realised I have a documentary so thought that would be good to look at as we are doing one.

As I thought it was really important for the first email to the client to be concise and draw them in I said we should do a proposal. Chase and I then met up and started brainstorming on the proposal:

Promotional DVD for Local reggae band including music videos, documentary and live video.
Service/ product that the client can distribute as they want.
Third year NTU student project.

Why:

Music has always been a big part of our lives especially reggae, dub and drum n bass and we wanted to keep it close to our hearts.
With the three different parts to the DVD I can show off a variety of techniques and a variety of skills, such as different camera skills and editing styles.
One part of my favorite types of audiovisual is documentaries.
A DVD is a very useful promotional tool for the band to get recognised.
Free for the band, more interesting promotion than a t-shirt or poster.
CD / DVD Sales - sell double sided DVD with one of artists Cd's.
As its a local band it reduces costs, improves accessibility / co-operation with band.

For my first Artefact I wanted to look at music videos and whether people prefer the new MTV style or if they were happy with the older style. This was to try and find out if the change in technology has come from the viewers changing and thus causing the advance in technology or if it has come from the other way round. PRP Writing the Essay

I had a lot of issues whilst writing the actual PRP essay. I started off with the title "How can a cut/ edit affect the modern day viewer?" but after having a surgery session it changed to "Have current delivery methods and techniques changed the perception of the viewer?" it slightly changed again and then ended up after talking with our course leader as "Audiovisual work has been constantly changing over time with the advancements of technology. How have recent styles and program formats changed to accommodate this and why?". This brought enough problems on its own as I kept having to research everything all over again, and change my essay to incorporate new things and decide what parts were still important. I was finding it particularly hard to find exactly what the problem was in my question, which made it difficult to know exactly where I was going whilst writing/ researching it. With the final title I managed to make headway and completed the essay.

I spent theese two days going through the books and reading sections that I thought would help me in writing my essay and planning my overall project. Some of the most interesting parts i have read was about the new MTV style which has come from the Music Video. I found this in The Technique of Film and Video Editing, it has been made popular by young audiences "looking for quick, evocative visual stimuli". It's biggest differnece from the more origional styles are that it doesn't usually have any set narritave goals but use feeling or mood as the main layers.

Today I searched for relevant books on the library website. I was trying to search for books on attention span but couldn't find any, I am presuming this is because attention span would be inside another topic. I also looked for older and newer techniques/ styles of editing. I found 3 books in the end. Two were at Clifton so I ordered those to come, I got an email the next day saying they were in and so I went and got all 3 of them.

Today I finally had my final talk with the owner of the Fish Society who told me what the last changes he wanted me to make. They were all cuts and he just gave me the estimated times of the parts he wanted me to cut, which were:

As I hadn't got the Health and Safety forms signed but had booked out:

and my actors and crew had said that they were up for filming, I thought I may as well do a practice shoot. I had some issues whilst filming that I couldn't get the shots that I originally planned as the room was smaller than I had anticipated and made it hard to get certain angles.

I captured it and then watched through the footage. It was far too dark although it had looked fine through the camera. There was not enough shot variety as I couldn't get all the shots i had planned. The shots i had got all took slightly longer than i had thought they would as well, and slightly longer in a 20 second piece makes a huge difference!

I came back from my Nana's and played my first acting role in my mate Joe's Ad. His idea was that some one walks around the streets swapping cardboard folders which have band, film and program names on them, with other people. It took us a few hours to film and went quite well.

I searched online for journal articles and News articles. I was having problems trying to find useful articles and as I am a very slow reader it takes me a long time to find what exactly is important in the variety of articles I was reading.

Simulated Project Proposal

Introduction:
I am undertaking a third year NTU project in which we have to create a 20 second T.V. advert which explains what file sharing is, when and why it is illegal and also the consequences of file sharing. It is for a public information campaign run by the Copyright Protection Society.
As I want to get into the film industry I feel quite strongly about file sharing. This is due to the fact that so many people do it. As it may affect money I could be getting in the future. Since I have started this course I have stopped downloading films and have bought a lot.
This document shall be split into three main parts. The background and context which will explain the background research I did and how it influenced my project designs and plans. The project designs and justifications are the second section which will include my final product designs including some of my shots from frame forge and my location shots. I will then explain why the designs are appropriate for the project and what way they fulfil the brief. The third part is the project schedule where I shall out lay what I plan on doing and when I’ve planned to do things by, and why I have organised my schedule like this.

Background and context:
I started my research by looking up information on the recent case of Pirate Bay. I read two BBC news articles that I found online, each at a different stage of the Pirate Bay court case. One of the most relevant parts to this project, was that the four administrators were sentenced to one year in jail and £3 million in damages to a variety of entertainment industries (BBC, 17/04/09). This gives a starting point to finding out about the consequences of file sharing it also shows how damaging it is to the industry. The BBC also had an article on the “Pirate Party” and I was amazed by the face that, “…the Swedish Pirate Party attracted 7% of the Swedish vote in June's European election… In the German general election last month, the German Pirate Party won the support of 13% of first-time male voters” (BBC, 19/10/09). This shows the increase in file sharing and it even continued to say how the founder of the pirate party Mr. Falkvinge said "We are talking about being the largest party for the next generation of voters." and that he proposes “to make file-sharing not only legal but actively encouraged.” (ibid). This gave me even more of a motive to try and create a good advert and I decided my target audience would be people from around fifteen to twenty-five.
I then decided to find out exactly what part of file sharing is illegal and why and what are the consequences. I found the answer to what and why it is illegal in the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (Gov, 1988) (Appendix 1) which outlined the different cases of copyright infringement. I then found that for every copyrighted file you can get a fine of up to $150,000 which is about £90,656 (Sulair, 2004). I also came across a Times Online article which said that “…research also showed that half of 14 to 24-year-olds were happy to share all the music on their hard drive…” (Times Online, 2008) which made me want to do a advert showing this as I know a lot of people that do this, it also strengthened my reasoning’s for my target audience age.
Now knowing all that I needed to fulfill the brief I had a look at some ads on YouTube to get influences. After looking at a lot of different adverts some good and some bad I decided that I wanted to try and make it humorous as I found that funnier ads were more affective, such as a Piracy add which had Jack Black standing there listing off bizarre, over exaggerated reasons of why you shouldn’t download music or films (STUMMPY34, 2009) and an Ipod Shuffle ad in which you can see the top half of a girl in what you presume to be a bathroom holding a white stick looking at it and turning it around trying to see if she is pregnant, a man then walks in and she says “I cant tell if its positive or negative” he then says “Its an Ipod shuffle” it then fades to a white screen with black writing saying “Ipod Shuffle good for music” and fades back to the guy saying “it’s a boy” the girl then screams in joy and gives him a hug (YouTube, 2007). This made me want to create a comedy advert. Finally, I also found adverts that start off light hearted or funny and then change abruptly to something serious, such as a THINK! “Drug Drive” ad which starts out with three guys and a girl in a car driving talking and joking about their night, when they see a police car and try to act normally you see the police drive past then some blue flashes and a siren. There is then a voice over saying the fact that drugs affect your eyes, how the police pick up on this and the consequences for being caught (YouTube, 2009). With all these in mind I started brainstorming ideas.
Project Designs and Justifications:
Taking in that it has to be very short and so needs to be quite simple I decided on a final advert that included all the things that I wanted after doing my research. I wrote the script (Appendix 2) which starts in a bedroom with two 21 year old guys played by Chase Martini and Terrance Nabbs sitting next to a computer. One is wearing tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie and the other will wear jeans and a collared t-shirt to show that it’s not any specific type of people that are file sharing. There will be a skull and cross bones flag behind the computer screens to add a bit of comedy value and to keep the viewer reminded that it is piracy. Chase asks for some downloaded items off Terrance’s hard drive, they then joke about the it being illegal, they then hear a police siren and a policeman bangs through the door saying “do you have the rights?”, it will then fade to a black screen and you then will hear a sound of a jail door closing and white block writing will come up saying “……………………………………………..” I feel this covers all the issues that need to be covered to fulfill the brief. It talks about where file sharing can be illegal and is increasing seen on my research which is by friends sharing hard drives and copying thousands of songs, and lots of films in about 10 minutes. It tells you that file sharing is illegal when the material is copyrighted through the policeman’s dialogue and the consequences from where Chase says “you can get such a heavy fine for just doing this!”. I plan to research the history of people’s habits in a sense of a film. I then shall look at whether more recent delivery methods and techniques of audiovisual work have changed from the decrease in the viewer’s attention span. With the supposed decrease of viewer’s attention spans seen at: http://www.eastgate.com/HypertextNow/archives/Attention.html there must be some effect on the more recent delivery methods and techniques of audiovisual work. To find out whether this is true I shall look at different techniques used by modern day practitions and compare them to older practitioners, for example Lev Kuleshov’s theory of “relationship” editing and see how the old theory has been adapted and used in more modern practitioners work such as Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” and “2001: A Space Odyssey” in the computer HAL and how the different techniques have changed the perception of the viewer. I shall also look for papers that are linked with this problem like Carol A. There are so many different ways of delivering multimedia work now, from DVDs and CDs to the Internet which has probably impacted the delivery methods the most. The increase in the use of the internet and high speed internet connections in households has meant a huge increase of audiovisual work being uploaded onto the internet. From the internet there are then a variety of ways to deliver the work such as downloading films or music videos on to your computer or mobile or from streaming audiovisual work through sites such as YouTube. I shall look at a variety of contexts and different styles of audiences and see how the delivery methods have changed the viewers perception. These will range from work on internet sites where anyone can upload their videos on to, such as YouTube to film festivals and audiovisual exhibitions where the work will be from practitioners. I will find how these different styles of delivery will impact the audience’s perception. I think they will alter as people viewing mainstream based programming such as at film festivals, are more likely to have a greater knowledge in the subject, and understand what a film maker is trying to say when using different techniques. This is compared to someone using social based programming such as watching a video on YouTube who may have not much or no interest in film. To try and find out if the delivery methods have changed the viewers perception I shall collect my own data by carrying out tests on people from the younger “MTV generation” and people from the older generations by showing them very short video clips and show them larger video clips and seeing how their perceptions on the film change, and research more into the subject by reading books and searching for papers on related topics and see if there is a change in attention span.

If you are looking at how it has changed where is the information about comparing the two coming from? Are you testing this on young and older people? I suggest that the attention span of youth is shortening and this could be a contributing factor to the development and style of editing. There may be others but here you compare. I think that you could carry out some of your own data gathering methods here.
You should be more precise about where you are getting your info for research. Perhaps you look at mainstream and social based programming. It may also include more than the edit and look at issues such as frame size, fidelity, resolution and colour.
i.e.have current delivery methods and techniques changed the perception of the viewer. This wider subject may give you more to discuss than merely the edit only.
Kuleshov was such a long time ago has there been any advancement since he introduced “relationship” editing as you describe.

I plan to research whether current delivery methods and techniques have changed the perception of the viewer. The film industry is growing and different software is being developed allowing the film makers to use more advanced special effects and have the ability to create more surreal plots. Thus the viewers are more accepting to different scenarios. There has also been an increase in popularity of three styles of audiovisual which are sitcoms, music videos, and sound bites. The rise of these styles has resulted in a lot of critics saying that these styles are “debased by their brevity” and has decreased viewer’s attention spans. The supposed decrease of viewer’s attention spans could be affecting the development and style of editing for current work being produced. The increase in internet and high speed internet connections in households has changed the delivery methods of media drastically, with a huge increase of audiovisual work being uploaded onto the internet. I shall look at different multimedia contexts and a variety of different styles of audiences. These will range from work on internet sites where anyone can upload their videos on to, such as YouTube to film festivals and audiovisual exhibitions where the works will be from practitioners. I will find how these different styles of delivery will impact the audience’s perception. I think they will alter as people viewing mainstream based programming such as at film festivals are more likely to have a greater knowledge in the subject, and understand what a film maker is trying to say when using different techniques, compared to someone using social based programming such as watching a video on YouTube who may have not much or no interest in film. To try and find out if the delivery methods have changed the viewers perception I shall collect my own data by carrying out tests on people from the younger “MTV generation” and people from the older generations and see if there is a change in perception and research more into the subject by reading books and searching for papers on related topics. I will also look different older techniques and theories and compare them to the more modern ones, for example Lev Kuleshov’s theory of “relationship” editing and see how the old theory has been adapted and used in more modern practitioners work such as Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” and “2001: A Space Odyssey” in the computer HAL and how the different techniques have changed the perception of the viewer.

Chase and I set up a meeting with Lenroy at a Cafe/ Bar. We went there and he was with his business partner Rich. We came out of the meeting with the following plans:

That he is doing a podcast for the evening post at the rescue rooms on the 2nd December and that we should try and sort out recording it if possible.
We also came up with some ideas of what to show during the documentary: What each member of the band is doing now, a performance video in the studio and how he made his new CD in his living room.

We talked about doing the DVD/ CD package and they thought of using the Live performance sound track as the CD.
Lenroy also said that they were going to Manchester to do a gig on Monday Nov 2nd and were having a rehearsal on Monday 26th Oct and that we should come and film that.

After thinking I came up with three basic ideas.

Show the outside of a house, have a title pop up saying that it is a director or music artist's house and have some one break in. Then show them inside the house and steal a film reel or an album. then have a voice over saying something along the lines of "you wouldn't break in and steal, piracy is illegal".
The second idea was to have an interview style ad either with an artist or with random people saying when it is illegal, why it is illegal and the consequences.
My third idea was after finding an article saying that "research also showed that half of 14 to 24-year-olds were happy to share all the music on their hard drive" which was on Times Online. It was to have two guys are in a room and one gives the other a hard drive. He puts it on his computer then you can hear sirens and Police burst in the room saying something like "Piracy is a crime! Do you have the right?"

My favorite out of these was the third idea and so i planned on expanding on this one.

With all the research I've done in mind i came up with a brief outline of what it needs to contain:
File-sharing: Copying files from one computer to another.
When is it illegal?: When the files being shared are copyrighted and you don't have the licence for it.
Why?: As it is an infringement of section 16 of the Copyright and Designs and Patent Act. The owner of the copyright has the exclusive right to:

Copy the work
Issue copies to the public
To perform, show or play the work in public.
To broadcast or include the work in any cable program
To make an adaption of the work or do any of the above in an adaption.

Copyright is then infringed when a person without the liscence of the copyright does or authorises somone to do any of the above.

Consiquences: Can result in penalties of up to $150,000 per copyrighted file £90,656.

After having the questions in my head I started looking at other ads to try and get some inspiration for my ad.
After watching a wide variety of different adverts I felt that funny ads were more affective, two particularly I liked were, one about Jack Black talking about piracy:

The second was an Ipod Shuffle add which has a girl in that thinks it is a pregnancy test:

I also thought other ads that start off light hearted and then have an abrupt part that changes the mood worked well and gets the point across clearly. An example of this is the THINK!

Finally it seemed there were alot of ads that were basically just interview style ads with people blatently saying the issues or points they want to get across. I found one done by American students from SIFE Belmont University that had a very simmilar breif to ours.

With all these in mind I had a good idea of what I wanted my ad to be like and so I started brainstorming ideas.

After finding out about Pirate Bay and the Pirate Party I then went on to do some more research to find the answers to the questions we had to answer with in the add. I found out about when and why file sharing is illegal and I got the answeres in the Designs and Patents Act which I found in an article called "BBC Copyright and Filesharing" at Lawdit Reading Room http://www.lawdit.co.uk/reading_room/room/view_article.asp?name=../articles/1305-MC-Filesharing-BBC-Copyright.htm which was as follows:
“Section 16 of the Copyright Designs and Patents relates to 'acts restricted by copyright in a work' The owner of the copyright in a work has the exclusive right to do the following acts in the United Kingdom (a) to copy the work (see section 17) (b) to issue copies of the work to the public (see section 18); (c) to perform, show or play the work in public (see section 19); (d) to broadcast the work or include it in a cable programme service (see section 20); (e) to make an adaptation of the work or do any of the above in relation to an adaptation (see section 21); It follows that copyright in a work is infringed by a person who without the licence of the copyright owner does, or authorises another to do, any of the acts restricted by the copyright.”

I then wanted to find out the exact consiquences of file sharing, as they can change slighlty in each case I could not take Pirate Bay's as a definate. "Babylon" Film Restoration

Whilst watching the credits I stumbled across a extras section on the DVD showing the restoration from the original 1980s film to the 2008 version which has had a complete digital restoration . This was really interesting and I was amazed by the fact that it is possible to get from such poor quality to the much more detailed, better coloured quality we can watch now. In the original you can hardly make out a head and the colour of some one jacket to being able to tell the colour of their eyes! It is done by "digitising the original film at high resolution, then dirt, dust and damaged sections were digitally removed frame by frame to create an unblemished digital version." This was taken from the DVD, I am trying to find the video from the extras.

We have been given the brief for this project that we must create a 20 second public information add for the Copyright Protection Society on illegal file sharing. we have to cover the following things in our ads:

The first thing that came to my head when hearing this brief was the MPAA Anti Piracy Ad that is shown at the beginning of almost every film whether it be on DVD or at the cinema.

I started off by looking at the recent Pirate Bay court case. I found three BBC News reports on the case two from different times in the court case and the third about the Pirate Party. Here are the notes i made on them.

Richard Falkvinge - Leader of the Pirate Party who are trying to reform laws around copyright and patents in the digital age. said the verdict was "a gross injustice".
"Today's events wake file sharing a hot political issue and were going to take this to European Parliament".
The Pirate Bay is the worlds most high profile file sharing website and was set up in 2003 by anti-copyright organisation Piratebryan, but for last 5 years it has been run by individuals.
Millions of files are exchanged using the service everyday.
No copyright content is hosted on pirate bay's web servers - instead the site hosts torrent links.

I was Looking on the Notts Dub website again and we clicked on a link to a website for Lenroy Bassie Guiste which had a poster on it for a art exhibition at which the Natural Ites were playing. We thought this would be a great way to hopefully get a client, as if they weren't interested they may know someone who would be. We went down there and watched them play and filmed parts of it. Whilst they were playing we were getting nervous as we didn't recognise who was who and so weren't sure who to talk to afterwards. We also felt as we may look a bit stupid going up and asking if we could do work for them as they started as musicians (in the Natural Ites at least) in 1980 and we may seem a bit amateur. In the end we didn't mind as if we didn't get anything from it at least we got to listen to some sick reggae! But this wasn't the case when they had finished we went and spoke to the bassist, Lenroy Bassie Guiste. Chase told him the idea and what we wanted to do and Lenroy sounded quite enthusiastic and excited about it, gave Chase his number and Chase said he would call him on monday.

During the summer Chase was looking for clients and found two music artists to use. First was a Nottingham based reggae band called Moonbuggy, but they had a change in some of the band members and so said they didn't want to make any commitments. The second was Jakwob but after having the manager say that they would be interested in working with us, but the manager shortly after stoped working with Jakwob Chase then tried to go straight to Jakwob but the only way contacting him was through MySpace and never got a reply. I then had a look for a possible client and found a website called nottsdub.co.uk which had a local reggae artist called Percy Dread and a local dub artist called Notts Dub which seemed like two very good possibilities. I was quite hope full that something would come out of this, if not from those artists from another as on Notts Dub website it says "Notts Dub provides ground level support for artists, performers and associated industries in and around Nottingham.". I spoke to Chase about it and we agreed to meet up to come up with draft proposal to then email these artists.

I was originally thinking of trying to do some editing work for a client but wasn't sure who exactly and my lecturer said this may be difficult. Chase Martini a class mate came and said he had come up with the idea of doing a music video and that the lectures had said that they would expect a music video, a documentary and a live performance and that this would be a lot of work, so to get someone to work with him and he asked if I wanted to do it. I thought this sounded a bit more interesting than my original idea and so said that I was up for it. We said at this point that he would be the producer/ director and I would do the editing and camera work.

Whilst waiting for the Fish Society to get back to me about the feedback I started editing the "Cooking Halibut" film. Straight away the biggest problem with this film was it was much less formally shot and there were 4 people sitting around a table just off screen eating some mussels that had been cooked just before. This meant that there was voices through alot of it and meant I couldn't use that footage. Another problem was where I moved in for close ups whilst it was on the side meant that the sound from the oven would disappear in a few shots but this didn't seem to matter too much! The third major issue was Mark (the chef) has a quite voice and is very hard to understand in the film at certain points. I put together a first draft and posted it up on youtube.

After finishing the first edit i then put it up on YouTube and emailed The Fish Society to say it was up. They got back to me and said they wanted to call and go through the adjustments they wanted me to make. To do this we both hit start on the film at the same time and sat through it and stopped at the points that they wanted me to change, they were as follows:

I have been on the phone for 2 hours already and still not been able to make any headway just been sent between Customer Services and Technical support both saying that I need to speak to the other to get a link to be able to download the program again as I left the disks at Uni.

After 3 hours on the phone I was given a link to go to a document and was told to go through and do everything the document said "and this should fix your problem". I went through the whole of the document which none of it worked and then i got to the bottom where it said "re-install the product" by this point I had spent 5 hours working on the problem and so decided to call it a day.

The next day i called adobe again and managed to fix the problem in 5 minutes!!!

Fish Film Editing the 30 kg halibut

The first issue in the editing that i realised i would have was keeping the film to 5 minutes. As i had 45 minutes of footage most of which was important to the filleting as there weren't any retakes or anything. I went throught the editing and didnt have any major problems other than the one already stated. I managed to get it down to 7 minutes 30 and as I said I would do a slightly longer version also I tried to render the video and then export it. At this point problems really started occuring!!

Every time I treid to render it I would leave it and go and do something else but everytime I came back and treid to do anything my computer crashed. After about 2 - 3 hours i finally managed to get it all rendered without it crashing and so then treid to export it as a video and then the problems continued! The first time it exported again the computer crashed after having exported it, but the exported file did not work, and so i treid again. This time my Adobe Media Encoder stoped working, I tried to do this multiple times but it failed and so i called Adobes customer support!

The other day I went back to The Fish Society to film the final piece on the 30 Kg Halibut. The shoot went well. It took about 2 hours to shoot which was slightly less than i had originally planned it would take and I had about 45 mins of footage. I spoke to the chairman of of The Fish Society to see what he thought about the practice films i had done, and he was very happy with them but said he wanted:

Having got all the footage I then sat down and began editing. The skate wing came first and I wasn’t very happy with it really, as he did 6 skate wings and these were the first things shot, the camera was very wobbly I didn’t know exactly what he was doing next (I had asked him to tell me) and I was slightly nervous. There also was no real cut points as if I tried to take a shot from one skate wing and join it to another the fish would be in a completely different place in the next shot. I was much happier with the wild salmon and the halibut though as we took much more time over these and I made sure I knew what he was going to be doing next. I feel they flow nicely and they do what they are meant to as I think I could fillet a fish now! Here are the practice edits:

I went down to where the shoot would be taking place. It was a large warehouse with a massive walk in freezer in it, as all of The Fish Society's fish is sold frozen. The main area for me was a squared off part of the warehouse with sinks along one side and work surfaces around the rest of it "the prep area". This is where they gut, fillet and whatever else needs doing to the fish before they are packed and put into the freezer, and this is where I would be filming. For the first half hour I was just walking around this area looking for where I could take shots from, and what might work well. Alistair, the owner of The Fish Society then told me he had three fish to practice on: skate wings, a wild salmon and a 14 kg halibut, and we filmed them in that order. Everything went quite well but Alistair would say something funny or something about the fish that ought to be on the film whilst the camera was off, which was a bit annoying!

I have recently been given the opportunity to create a "How to Fillet a Halibut" for a fish company called The Fish Society. Obviously I snatched up this opportunity as quickly as possible! I spoke to them, to find out some more about it. I found it will be a 30 Kg Halibut! At this asked if it would be possible to do a trial run before hand as I imagine that it would be quite expensive!! I also needed to do a bit of a recce to check the lighting, if they have plug sockets, etc. They agreed that I could go down and get some practice there. The next thing I did was start looking on YouTube for any similar videos but found the only ones there were, were done on camera phones and were very low quality and did not look very good, but I took in account of how it was filleted so I had a rough idea of what shots I may use for different stages of the filleting.

First of all i would like to say that i know the music i have used is copyrighted and that if i was going to send this film to a competition i would have to change the music, or get rights for the music by contacting the person that owns the rights. I did originally look for un-copyrighted music but i couldn't find any that suited my film.
After deciding that i was going to use copyrighted music I looked through my ITunes and on YouTube for music that carried the right sort of feel and also had a similar narrative to that part of my film. This took a lot longer than i had originally thought it would take!

Evaluation Of Film

Overall i am very happy with the success of my first ever film! Obviously there are things i am not completely happy with and if i were to do it again i would change. Firstly I put a radio sound throughout the first scene to try and add atmosphere to it but i am not sure how much it sounds like a radio, that is actually in the room. I have shown a few people and they have said it does but i am not convinced!
The next problem i had was also in the first scene, which was the fact that at certain points the continuity is not exactly right and so it makes a certain part of it very jumpy. If I had of had more time and costs to get my actors to me more often i would have like to of re-shot this scene.
The next problem came from the quick shots of the boys practicing pickpocketing as i said earlier people didn't get that this was meant to be them practicing. I tried to do a voice-over Garry using my voice (for the same reason as before about getting the actors back over to me), as my lecturer Jules said that if you show Garry and put a voice over the audience will most likely presume it is the actors voice. I tired this and i couldn't make my voice anything like the actors and so it sounded awful!!

Await the opening of the heart warming story Leaving Home. Dave and Garry are brothers forced to leave home after constant domestic violence. Their eyes are opened into the criminal lifestyle of living on the street and what must be done. Until one event happens that changes their life forever and reunites a failing family. To be released after 6 months in the making, at Nottingham Trent Uni. on the 22nd May 2009. This film is aimed to raise awareness about the harshness of living on the street and the serious problems brought from alcohol.

Directed, produced and edited by the young and upcoming Nottingham Trent University Student Chris Dubock.

Chris Dubock has travelled around a lot for his young age, taking in a lot of inspiration from different cultures. Such as part of the inspiration for this film from visiting a street kid home in Tanzania. After living in Switzerland for 6 years he moved back to England to go to University in Nottingham. After deciding computer game design (what he originally had planned to do) wasn’t what he wanted to do and undertook Audiovisual which got him to where he is now.

This is Dubock Productions first film and Chris Dubock has only part taken in one other piece of audiovisual work which was a four minute documentary on whether graffiti is an art form or a crime from the perspective of a graffiti artist in which he took the editors role.

What is the mum journey
I asked if they understood what was happening during the scene where the kids were meant to be practicing pickpocketing, and they didn't so i had to try and change this around some how.

After fixing Premier Pro i decided to try and sort a trailer out. Before starting i looked at a few trailers on youtube to get an idea for how i may like to do mine, including a few Shane Meadow films, Thundercats the movie, slumdog millionare, into the wild, Pineapple Express and SCUM, I alos looked at a variety of amateur film trailers. I quite liked ones with not too much talking in and took this into my trailer. All the amateur film trailers used writing poping up mixed with shots from the film, and think i will follow the trend.

I also searched for some music that i thought would be fitting and came up with three songs:

Chase and Status - Running
The Offspring - Gone Away
Trashmonkeys - Leaving Home

I chose these taking in the style of music and what the lyrics were saying and wheather it would fit with my movie style and narrative or not.

Debs Feedback 2

I got feedback from debs again in the seminar this week, which was the following:

Cut back daves first lines so he almost interupts the mum in the argument.
Take out the "static" shots during the first scene.
Overlay sounds during the argument such as a radio (which i still hadnt done but planned to)
Get more shots for the last shot in scene 1, such as a few differnt shots of when she lights the cigarette.
When the boys leave the house the shot is too blue so change the colour (more red)
Take out the first person going to pickpocket the mum
Leve mum on longer right after the boys pickpocket her
Does the zoom out at the graveyard from the mum work?

Editing Issues

The first problems came the other day with editing which was a pretty major issue. My Premier Pro stopped working the other day and as it is CS4 i can not work on my saved files at uni. It kept cumming up with an error message and wouldn't let me reinstall it. A few days later after calling Adobe's technical support a few times and being on hold for over an hour i managed to get it fixed and so moved on!

I have been working on cutting down the 10 minute film and got it to 6 minutes 45. I have noticed that i am missing some key shots in it though and have organised for my actors to come back down for a re-shoot. Here is the latest edit:

Again I didn't have any problems whilst editing and am quite happy with how the edits are coming along. I haven't tweaked with the audio or put music to it yet as until i have got the video to 6 minutes i don't know what will be where.

I took this video into Uni and showed it to Debs in a seminar and got the following feedback:

Do i need music in the first scene, or could i just use sounds to build atmosphere
The shot of the boys leaving home is too long
After the argument use less sound to show the tension
Change the practice pickpocket scene to make them a bit more interesting
Hold the first shot of the mum at the graveyard for longer
Fade in some music as the boys go to the graveyard
Take out a second when the boys walk away from the drinks fridge in the shop
Show more excitment when the boys whin the lottery
Don't zoom in on the AA Meeting peice of paper when the boys come home

I have been editing now for about ........ weeks and have produced quite a few draft edits starting at 8 minutes long, let me know what you think:

I didn't have any problems whilst editing this which was a nice surprise after the amount of crashes and issues I had editing the documentarys 2 terms ago. I am quite happy with how it is unraveling but have notticed a few shots i haven't taken and some that need to be re-shot.

After having shot the film i starting capturing the footage on to my computer and went over my footage and wrote down the time codes for the sections of the footage that i plan on using in my film. I am quite happy with the final outcome from the footage taken and the problems that i thought may come from light issues can probably be adjusted on Adobe's Affter Effects.

The main issues with the footage is that from shooting it all in two days due to having to pay travel expences and buy them food for lunch, I forgot to shoot a few small but quite key shots and but it shouldnt be a problem getting them back for a day to finish off all the little things.

Shoot Day 2

The second day of shooting went much better and we managed to shoot 6 scenes today which was good, it was much more relaxed and the actors had started bringing themselves more into the characters.

We started today by shooting in the Shop. Which went well but it was slightly smaller and the camera was slightly larger than i calculated when finding the location, which meant there werent as many camera angles possible as i had planned for but we made some adjustments and it turned out well. The only other issue was when the shop keeper got a bit confused with the script but he did well!

We then moved up the road and filmed the pickpocket scene and the quick scenes, these took longer than i had planned yet again but went well. The largest problem was when filming the quick shots of the boys practicing to pickpocket, the sound from the traffic and the amount of cars going past, but i am planning to have music over most of this part so it should be fine!

We ended by filming the last few scenes where the boys come back home and see the mum and of the boys in their room after collecting the money. The only problem again was me thinking the room was larger and the camera more maneuverable.

Shoot Day 1

Before we had really even started the shoot a huge change occured to my film, which was as you need an address to claim from the lottery, that it may be an idea for the mum to play the dad, but obviously change it to a mum rather than a dad. We shot the first scene the way planned with out showing the dad at all first which didnt turn out very well as it almost made it look like it was a comedy, so we tried using the Val (the mum) and changing the script slightly. Val shoked the whole room as she screamed at her son and so i though it was better to use val as the mum and have the boys come back to the house at the end.

We only managed to shoot 2 scenes the first day which was a bit dissapointing as i was hoping to get about 5 scenes done the first day, and only planned a short space of time on the second day but luckily the actors had the whole day free so said they would come earlier than planned. The main reason for this i think was it was the first time i had managed to meet the actors and so everything was a bit tense. Also having to shoot a sort of fight scene was quite difficult to do as you wanted to get them falling in the wright places so that they could get up

and continue the scene as planned. Another issue was getting the continuity correct after things got nocked that were on the sofas e.t.c.

Another major problem i had was the second scene we shot in the graveyard for part of it my camera man has put the filter on and for part of it, it was off so there is a huge difference in the lighting. I am going to see if it is possible to fix it in Premier Pro but if not i shall have to re-shoot this scene.

Actor Issues

Over the last week i have had two of my actors drop out, One because he was given a bigger role in another film and the other just never got back to me. Due to the shoot date problems i talked about before i had started looking for other actors that may have more dates free. I contacted the Lace Market Theatre Group and put a Notice up saying that i was looking for actors and a breif description of my film, I also got in contact with the drama department of NCN, but still haven't heard back from them. Luckily for me last weekend the one actor i still had knew two people that could play two of the roles but i still dont have a Dad and so have decided to go on with my film but with out actually showing the Dad. To help get an idea of how this may work i remade my frameforge without having the dad in the two scenes he is in. I have however set up two shoot days. These being the 10th and 11th of March.

Since having completed my frameforge i have been having real problems managing to get a shoot date that both my main actors can make, I was thinking if there was anyway of filming it so that i could have one of them shoot some days and the other shoot parts another day but as they are both in every scene this was not really feasable. I got this problem because i left finding actors until after i had finished my script, so far doing this project i have learnt that you should start looking for actors as soon as you have your treatment done so that you can make sure you can get the actors for the days you want.

I was told by Debs (Lecturer) that they were ok but i have to do the writing on the computer as my handwriting is poor, and gave me the idea of possibly doing them digitally rather than by hand due to my lack of drawing ability!
